In 2005, my mom made copies of my grandmother’s newspaper column, “Grandmother Always Told Me…” for everyone in the family. The goal of Grandma K’s article was to write about her grandmother, Grandmother Grace, and the traditions she and the family had.
I love reading these articles because they are timestamp on what was happening in the world for my grandmother and documentation of how my great-great grandmother lived her life.
As I have read through my grandmother’s articles, it has inspired me to keep writing.
Alternatively, my grandmother on my father’s side, Mimi, loved music and telling stories. Every time Mimi entered the room with these, she brought light and playfulness. She came from an Irish family and after travelling to and reading about Ireland, I have realized that storytelling and song writing are foundational for the Irish people.
This collection is a nod to those who have inspired me to stay creative and to stay true to myself.
